No safe space here!
With the title of the exhibition "No safe space here!", we ironically circulate one of the strange demands of a young academic generation for protection from what they see as intellectual, aesthetic and historical impositions.
Art has never been a safe space and it would be degraded to kitsch if that were expected of it. Quite the opposite: the paintings by Christoph Löffler, born in 1966, executed in meticulous, multi-layered oil glaze painting, evoke a wide range of emotions, from real horror to resounding laughter. Some viewers are honestly alienated by the "spooky" cuddly toys, others even recognize themselves reflected in them. However, all reactions are united, the pictures leave no one bored and untouched.
The same applies to the sculptor Peer Oliver Nau, born in 1971. His métier is the chainsaw, with which he drives out very living creatures - humans, animals and mythical creatures - from large-format wooden parts in a virtuoso way. There seem to be no limits to his imagination so far, but on closer inspection, the bite can sometimes get stuck in your throat, because under a cheerful, colorful surface hides irritating irony to the zeitgeist.
